Background
Solar powered cars present an opportunity for reducing electricity demand from the grid for electric cars. They may also reduce the necessary battery capacity needed for a specific vehicle range. This could contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from both electricity generation and battery manufacturing. A smaller battery capacity also limits the amount of raw materials needed in the battery. However, manufacturing of the PV cells may in turn generate some additional greenhouse gas emissions and increase the requirements of other scarce materials. Further, geographical location of the car influences the amount of electricity generated by the PV cells as well as the energy use per km driven. Finally, the car use patterns will also affect the electricity that can be generated by the PV cells.
Volvo Cars sold more than 600,000 cars in 2022 and plans to only sell fully electric cars by 2030. Volvo Cars also plans to become climate neutral by 2040. Similar commitments have been made by Sweden and the European Union, targeting a phase out of conventional cars by 2035 in new car sales and achieving climate neutrality by 2045 and 2050, respectively. Solar powered cars could contribute to achieving these objectives by reducing electricy demand from the grid and battery capacity requirements.

This Master’s Thesis aims to assess the carbon footprint reduction potential of solar powered cars in a few selected key markets for Volvo Cars. The study will use prospective lifecycle assessment to estimate future emission reduction potentials – when solar powered cars become commercially available. The student(s) will collect metrological data, estimate the energy that can be generated by the PV cells and used in the vehicle, data to support assumptions on car use patterns and the energy requirements, and data on the integration of solar PVs in cars (with the help of Volvo Cars). The data will be used to construct a simple model for solar powered cars. The model will be combined with estimations of lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions (based on a literature review) and data on sales from Volvo Cars in different markets.
Background in industrial ecology and/or energy systems analysis. Experience with prospective lifecycle assessment is meritious.
Good programming skills (for example MatLAB).
The work is expected to be conducted primarily on-site at Volvo Cars in Torslanda, Göteborg.
