The best place to work in the Global Automotive Industry. Join us on this exciting journey into the future, we want to hear from you!
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
Background
Sustainability is one of the three pillars of our company purpose, freedom to move in a personal, sustainable and safe way, and is now as important to us as safety has been since the birth of our company. We are committed to becoming a more sustainable company and producing more sustainable products, as we recognise that this is essential for our future success. This drives demands for lighter designs with increased performance, robustness and reliability. Many components are manufactured by casting metals, where especially die-cast parts in aluminum are in focus in this study. Since the properties of these components are greatly affected by the manufacturing process, it is important to be able to correctly use simulation tools to better predict the final material properties of the component.
Scope
This work aims to increase knowledge about how the material properties of die-cast components are affected by local defects such as pores, oxide films and air inclusions. The work also aims to increase the understanding of how casting simulation can be used to predict the occurrence of these defects, and investigate how they affect the mechanical performance of the material.
The work aims to generate material data for strength calculations, and establish a simulation-based methodology where information about defects from casting simulation can be used to design reliable castings.
Existing components from series production to be evaluated and analyzed for tensile properties and defect quantities. Technologies such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) for full-field strain measurement to be used together with numerical evaluation techniques of both local and global properties to be applied to generate data for material models. A literature study describing "state-of-the-art" within defect creation and its impact on material properties is made that forms the basis for the work.
