Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
Background
A thermal event of a battery cell refers to a sharp rise in the internal battery temperature causing the inner structures of the battery to destabilize and degrade, which eventually leads to the failure of the battery. This process leads to the generation of a large amount of local heat as well as dispersed gas, droplets and particles which are vented from the cell due to increased pressure inside of the cell. To mitigate the situation, it is important to predict how this gas/particle mixture travel inside the pack and design thermal barriers to stop the propagation.
Blasting tests with different flow/particle characteristics will be performed 2023 Q4 to measure particle-flow and particle-wall interaction from a simplified set up designed to mimic the environment during thermal runaway of a cell. High speed video recording will be available along with other measurement data related to particle dynamics.
Scope
The aim of this thesis is to improve the current particle modelling method in Starccm+ by validation against existing test data on particle dynamics. You will investigate different modelling aspects such as turbulence modelling, Lagrangian particle modelling, space, and time resolution etc in order to reproduce the test in simulation.
You will have the opportunity to cooperate with colleagues within the battery department, other engineers within VCC as well as suppliers of cells and modules. You will be part of a team where everyone is included and collaborates well.
What you’ll bring
We are looking for students pursuing a Master of Science degree in applied mechanics, applied physics, automotive engineering, or similar, to qualify. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, both in oral and written English, are needed. The ideal candidate has a background in CFD/CHT analysis work preferably by modelling with STARCCM+. Further, you have a big interest in battery electric vehicles.
Duration
• The duration of the Thesis is 20 weeks
• The Thesis starts in Jan 2024
• 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor at University
• This thesis is suitable for 1- 2 students
