Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
Background
As part of Volvo Cars Electrification Strategy, The Power Electronics department within Vehicle Propulsion is developing Power Electronics for Traction Inverter in both hardware and software areas.
We are aiming for world class performance of these systems with high attention to energy efficiency and sustainability. Therefore, we need to further expand our knowledge and capability within modelling and simulations of inverter system performance using latest technology tools and methods.
Scope
Inverters have been used to drive the electric machines, and consequently, produce the desired speed and torque to propel the vehicle. With the advancement of electrification architecture (400V system vs 800V system), and the aim to increase the driveline efficiency, different wide band gap (WBG) devices have been exploring with Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices being widely accepted and utilized in nowadays inverters. Given the development of GaN devices, and its potential benefits on reducing switching losses and conduction losses, its stability may be of concern depending on the application such as Hard-switching converters or soft-switching converters.
Objectives
• Investigate different methods to characterize the performance of GaN devices and correlate the experimental results with different applications and operating conditions. The main outcome is the potential stability issues and the assessment of the application-specific and operating conditions which make the GaN device a suitable semiconductor technology.
Activities
• Investigate different methodologies to characterize the conduction performance of GaN devices;
• Investigate different conditions that could aggravate the stability of GaN devices;
• Build a measurement instrument prototype to characterize the stability of the conduction performance;
• Analyze the impact of the stability in the performance of power converters under different operating conditions;
• Write a technical report emphasizing the impact of potential stability issues in GaN-based power converters;
What you’ll bring
We welcome students with electrical engineering background, with strong power electronic knowledge, familiar with circuit design and Schematic/PCB layout design tools (i.e. Altium Designer), familiar with simulation tools (i.e. PLECS, Matlab/Simulink, PSIM), hands-on with lab instrumentation (i.e. Oscilloscope, power supplies, ...) and who are eager to learn and work in advance engineering projects.
Students should typically be available to be one or two days on site to join weekly consultant meetings.
Duration
• 30 credits/student
• January 2024 (or earlier)
• Number of students: preferably 2 students if whole scope is going to be covered
Be part of the change – apply today!
We’d love to receive and review your application. Selection will be ongoing during the application period, so do not hesitate to send in your application. Attach your CV and personal letter stating your interests within the given area and your thoughts and credentials.
Apply as soon as possible but no later than 20th of October.
Please note that applications via email will not be accepted.
